How to develop your essay writing skills

Because of the high quantity of essays that pass through your homework book every day, you have the advantage—as a college or high school student—to use each one as a stepping stone in becoming better at your writing. The trick is to consciously develop new skills into your writing while you complete essay after essay. Consider using the following techniques and implementing them in every writing assignment you tackle.

Plan your essay sections

By brainstorming your introduction, paragraphs, and conclusion; you will pave the way for the writing process. Select key ideas for each section and write them down in a draft format. Make sure you leave yourself the clues you need to effectively construct your writing later on.

Planning your sections this way also helps you to create coherency within your essay. Each paragraph should connect with its counterparts to create flow and structure when it is read.

Don’t be hesitant to spend a good five to ten minutes on your planning. It will take most of the think work out of the assignment during the sometimes strenuous writing process.

Hammer out the details in a rough draft

Practising your essay before you write it out will highlight any mistakes and challenges that may arise. Get these out of the way by writing a rough draft. Your final essay will be more refined if you first familiarize yourself with the content. It will also be more defined, because you can play with the structure of your ideas—moving them around if something doesn’t fit right.

Watch a video on your topic

If the inspiration part of your brain just refuses to wake up, try searching for a video on your topic. Usually, within a few seconds of watching one, ideas will start to flood your head and you’ll be spoilt for choice on which ones to use first.

Read other essays

Get in the habit of analyzing the writings of others. Reading essays as a part of your weekly routine will familiarize you with the style and structure you’ll be expected to write with on a regular basis.

You can find some free essay examples online, but the best samples are the ones obtained from academic writing companies that always deal with 'write my essay for me' requests and create the most difficult topics. They are usually quite affordable and can be used over and over again as templates with all your future essays.

Keep checking your title to stay on track

That quick glance over to your topic title will serve you well to keep your essay in the direction you initially intended. Essays usually have strict word count limitations, so the more you say that’s relevant, the better your essay will score. All custom writers tend to—at some point or another—allow their own writing to distract them from the main point of their topic. Another look at the topic often results in deleting content that was never part of the point in the first place. We all need that quick reality check, so get into the habit of continually rerouting yourself.

Forward and reverse proofreading

A skill you should start developing now is proofreading. There are two ways of proofreading that will enable you to correct your essay in different areas:

  • Forward proofreading is the traditional re-reading of your essay after you’ve taken a break. Read slowly and do so out loud so that you can pick up any errors pertaining to flow, grammar, or punctuation.
  • Reverse proofreading is strictly for spelling. You don’t want to be distracted by the content itself, so you scan the essay in reverse, thereby spotting spelling errors easily.
