What Is The Difference Between An Expository And Explanatory Essay

If you want to be a successful student, you need to be able to write all kind of papers. There are various templates you need to study in order to memorize the specific elements of each style. Once you know the basics, it will be very easy to complete your projects without losing time with research. An expository essay is very easy to compose as long as you know the general characteristics. Here are some differences between an expository and explanatory essay:

  • An explanatory essay is meant to provide an explanation of a process, situation or habit. The point of this kind of essay is not to explain any random idea, but to make understandable the parts that are otherwise complicated.
  • Unlike the previous one, the expository essay presents information about a specific topic and an analysis of the most important elements, not only the raw explanation.
  • In both kinds of papers, you need to present the information and the analyzed issues from a complete neutral point of view. Your content must be informative for the reader, not to emphasize your personal opinion. If you don’t follow these guidelines, the professor will consider that you did not fulfill the requirements of the paper.
  • Mention the sources that you used. Especially when you quote somebody, it is vital to reproduce the exact words, to emphasize the quote and to mention the author and the source. Even if the quote that you use is highly relevant to your essay, it will be useless if you did not mention the author.
  • Whenever you write a paper, you need to make sure you make effective research and that the information that you use needs to be verified and exact. Do not integrate data that is unclear or use arguments that are vague. You don’t want to look unprofessional or to leave the impression that you wrote your paper in a hurry.
  • Create a valid conclusion. In all types of papers, a conclusion is absolutely necessary. Many students neglect this, but it is very important to have some kind of closing lines where you make a resume of your essay. Many students prefer to write their opinion before the conclusion, so it will not be confused with the rest of the paper which need to be written from the objective point of view. Make sure the conclusion is short and concise, without too many exact details.
