July 2009

So many weddings, so little time. ;-D So we’re taking a break from Friday’s FAB Finds to bring you another fabulous wedding!

As if this vibrant couple needed another excuse to get people excited for their wedding, Ashleigh and Adam tied the knot on our nation’s Independence Day with a memorable celebration all weekend long. They started out at their home, inviting all comers and out-of-towners out for a leisurely and informal BBQ dinner. They cared so much for each of their guests and their well-being, it was easy to see how everyone was having a great time the entire weekend. Deciding upon Lansdowne Resort, they made it convenient for their friends and family to stay and relax for a while poolside, to get in a few rounds of golf, or perhaps a spa treatment earlier in the day before their wedding ceremony held on the terrace overlooking the resort’s spacious golf course.

Their ceremony, complete with personalized readings and two solos, was intimate in its encompassing by two tree groves on either side, offering the proceedings a sense of privacy. Ashleigh’s suite, luckily enough, overlooked part of the terrace so she and her bridesmaids were excited to see the goings-on and watch the guests arrive for the mid-afternoon ceremony. Meanwhile, Adam and his groomsmen, plus one “honorary groomsman” who was unable to to come, decided to relax for a spell in the resort’s tavern, playing pool and generally enjoying themselves. The honorary groomsman was present in more than just spirit, however, as a life-size cutout of him wearing a tux was carried by one of the groomsmen virtually everywhere that evening.

Despite it being July in Virginia, the weather was fairly mild so we took the opportunity to shoot some portraits outdoors, but of course the interior architecture and decor of the resort lent itself well to some one-on-one time with just the two of them during cocktail hour while their guests lounged on the club house deck. As the sun set that evening, Ashleigh’s dad welcomed all their guests and offered up amusing anecdotes from her childhood as well as a congratulatory toast to the couple to kick off the evening. The talented DJ Chris Laich helped get the party started that evening and kept it going throughout the far-off fireworks displays in neighboring cities and counties visible from the terrace, and kept people on the dance floor until the evening’s end to chants of, “One more song! One more song!…” But alas, they were to send off the couple into the night (in their decorated golf cart, no less) with sparklers long enough that Ashleigh and Adam decided to run through not just once or even twice, but three times as everyone cheered and wished them well.

The next day we met the couple out again, this time at the Jefferson Memorial, for a leisurely day-after portrait session before they headed home to pack for their honeymoon. We took it easy, doing some fun portraits with them and early on actually ran into a couple we both knew well–Sara and Nadim! You may remember them from their Springtime wedding last year, and Ashleigh also happens to be a teacher at the same school where Sara teaches and had found us because Sara shared the images from her wedding with Ashleigh. Talk about a wild coincidence! After briefly catching up, we continued to shoot a bit more around the memorial before heading to a spot just north of National Airport’s runway 19. While there, there was one portrait in particular we were thinking of doing, and although it took a couple of tries to get the alignment and timing just right, we were pleased with the results which you can see below. All in all, it was such a fun wedding with everyone being so easy-going and fun-loving. We had a blast and were absolutely thrilled to be a part of the celebration. Congratulations, Ashleigh and Adam – you guys are the best. Thank you for having us document your wedding!

Love the simplicity of flowers in mason jars, even if it is just pre-ceremony.

And of course Bill’s awesome shot for which we’re eternally grateful to Ashleigh and Adam for their patience. As much as we tried snapping our fingers and wiggling our noses, the jets appeared only on their own schedule and were not always exactly over the runway approach centerline.

We were happy to see Thomas, Lissa and Carl’s little boy, for his second Watch Me Grow portrait. The couple brought their little boy to Charlottesville for his session, and we hung out by the beautiful architectural backdrop of the University of Virginia that afternoon. He was such a blast, and one of the fastest-crawling little babies I’ve had a chance to photograph. The little dude is sure to challenge some of his track-and-field peers in the 2028 Olympics. Here are a few of our favorites from that afternoon, and it was wonderful seeing you both again, Lissa and Carl! We’re glad to see you all doing so well.

What a party for Spring and Chris! Congratulations to this easy-going couple who returned to the DC area from their home in New York to be with close family and friends who traveled from near and far themselves to celebrate their wedding with them. We started out the day in the couple’s suite at the historic Willard Hotel near the White House, just as Spring’s lovely Amsale gown arrived and as the fabulous team of  Kim Giammaria (recently featured as one of the People We Love!) and Beverly Leuterio were finishing up her hair and make-up in preparation for her and Chris seeing each other prior to the ceremony.

The air in the bridal suite was relaxed and easy-going, thanks in no small part to Spring’s mellow personality. Thanks to Christina at the hotel, we secured the spacious Jenny Linde suite for the couple’s first sight and, following a few quick portraits with them both, returned downstairs to the decorative Crystal Room to take care of the family photos prior to the ceremony. The rain from earlier in the day had already cleared by the time we started that afternoon, but it was a bit warm and typically Potomac-humid so everyone was happy to stay indoors and its air conditioning for as long as possible.

Once at Epiphany Catholic Church, the ceremony soon started once the guests all arrived via shuttle, with Chris and his groomsmen entering the sanctuary. Their guests got a good chuckle when his groomsmen did an about-face in unison and bowed toward the altar, while Chris momentarily remained motionless facing those seated in the pews. He quickly realized what he had forgotten though and garnered a few muffled chuckles as he completely his bow. The couple had asked some of Chris’ family members do readings from both Testaments as well as Prayers of the Faithful. Once the ceremony finished, they recessed outside in beautiful afternoon light to celebrate with members of their wedding party before sliding into the limo for the ride back to the Willard.

The party really got started back at the hotel. While cocktail hour was held out on the terrace, finishing touches were made in the ballroom, with decor designed by the ever-talented Michele Hodges (and her fabulous assistant, Diane) with Michele Hodges Events, with floral arrangements by another one of our creative favorites, Dragonfly (two weddings in a row now we’ve gotten to photograph their fabulous work). Following the couple’s announcement to enthusiastic applause and energetic first dance, Spring’s grandfather offered up grace for a delicious dinner served by the hotel’s staff. Between courses the couple also danced with their parents and generally opened up the dance floor for anyone who wanted to get their groove on, which was, judging by the room’s energy, just about everybody.

Later in the evening, their best man Frank offered up a very amusing toast to the couple and in the process renamed Chris to something he liked better, Og’s (which, admittedly, has a certain ring to it), while a couple of other groomsmen reclined on the floor or sat cross-legged in rapt mock attention. It was hilarious. Guests couldn’t wait to get back on the dance floor to groove the sounds of the lively Highway Star band, which went well past midnight still going strong. It was a wonderful wedding and we were thrilled to have been a part of it. Thank you so much, Spring and Chris, for having us out and congratulations on your marriage! We had a great time with you both, as well as your family and friends!

Welcome back, everyone! We found a few free moments this week, in between some incredible weddings, to find some fabulous finds for you. Hope you enjoy!

Invitations We Love – Joy & Jerry

You’ll recognize Joy and Jerry from their recently blogged beautiful wedding. You can see all three(!) posts from their fabulous day - Part 1, Part 2, which shows many of their wonderful details and Part 3! Their entire day, as well as their incredible details, were all top notch and thoroughly thought out.

When Joy first showed us their invitation packet over lunch, I think I actually let out an audible gasp! The envelope was soooo thick with lovely calligraphy so I knew we were in for a special treat when we opened it. The  envelope itself is lined with a rich, chocolate brown moire silk and the invitation is a modern, letter pressed design on the thickest cream card stock we’ve ever seen—even thicker than our business cards and those could prop up wobbly furniture, although we don’t recommend them for that particular use. ;)

Joy carried the design through to the menu cards, table numbers, chocolate brown cocktail napkins and even the wedding certificate that all the guests signed. The design, calligraphy, focus on one rich color and the contemporary invitation wording completely fit the event and the couple.  Such gorgeous and thoughtful attention to detail definitely lets your guests know they are in for an amazing day and evening (extending through the next morning in their case!).

While we photographed the invitation at the wedding, I wanted to include the entire gorgeous suite in a few photos. When thinking about what background to use, I immediately thought of my maternal grandmother’s wedding dress! It’s been in storage and hidden away for many years, but was recently uncovered during a too-short spurt of basement organization. I decided the elegance of the invitation and the dress were the perfect match. My grandmother Rose would have absolutely adored these.

Ideas We Love – Innovative Color Combination’s

Many of you may remember Joy and Ben’s (whose wedding was featured in the latest Washingtonian Bride and Groom) sleek, bright and fun orange and sky blue color scheme. Their colors were perfect for a summer wedding. Flipping through a recent copy of The Knot magazine, I found another color scheme that I wouldn’t have thought of, but totally love—lemon yellow and aqua! Be sure to check out their great color-combo advice!

These cute cupcake flags could easily be an Idea We Love, too!

Ideas We Love – Inspiration Boards

As you can see in the color boards above, Inspiration Boards can really bring your wedding theme/style together cohesively. We’ve been lucky enough to have several of our images featured in the many style boards that can now be found on various wedding themed blogs, but Abby at Style Me Pretty was one of the first to start doing them and we’ve been fans ever since. (And proud Little Black Book members!)  Fittingly, she now invites her many readers to submit Inspiration Boards for periodical contests with fame and prizes to be awarded. She’s currently running a contest to create a board based on one the gorgeous dress styles found in their new SMP Look Book and the current winner will receive a $250 gift card to Crate and Barrel! Check out the details, but hurry – boards must be submitted by next Friday, July 31st!

People We Love – Kim G – BeautyMark

Sometimes you can just tell when certain people were born to do what they do. Kim Giammaria is one of those people. We’ve had the pleasure of working with Kim on several weddings throughout the years and we always get super excited to see her again. Not only is she incredibly talented, she’s one of the most warm, kind-hearted, and genuine people we know. She always makes our brides, along with their family and friends, look absolutely radiant on their wedding day, but totally natural at the same time. We have a sneaking suspicion that she connects with just about everyone she meets.

We honestly can’t recommend Kim highly enough. Even if you’re not getting married, but are perhaps going to a special event, you’ll definitely want to “connect” with Kim! Here are just a few shots of her working and the lovely results!
