April 2008

A blue-sky congratulations go out this week to Marcie & Garrett, who enjoyed a gorgeous outdoor ceremony with close family and friends out at Tuckahoe Plantation, just west of Richmond. They had chosen this spot, in a rustic garden just east of the mansion and at the end of a long dirt road for its authenticity and beauty, and Mother Nature made sure they and their guests were able to take full advantage of it. After seeing each other privately for the first time that day in the grove adjacent to the garden, and after portraits with them and their families, everyone sat and relaxed for a short bit until the ceremony got started. “Off” spray and bug wipes were in great use as the gnat population was also humming that day, but they did their job! Their guests were kept amused prior to the ceremony with programs describing how they knew members of the wedding party and various humorous characteristics of each, including a funny story of how they themselves met. They then said their vows under a massive old oak, the oldest tree in Virginia.

Garrett’s grandfather stood to recite a reading and by the end he and most of the guests were so emotional tears were coming down their faces. Moments like that are so meaningful to us because they illustrate the familial bonds our clients have and just how tightly knit their families are. It’s truly wonderful to witness. Marcie’s godfather, a pastor himself, also offered a final prayer for the couple just before their kiss and recessional back toward the mansion, followed very shortly thereafter by a group photo of the new husband and wife with all their guests.

During cocktail hour in the adjacent garden, everyone lined up to enjoy some signature drinks the couple had helped create while browsing through the rows and rows of beautiful spring blooms while the sun began it’s late-afternoon descent. Later, they all walked across the road and into a nearby field to the tent where the evening’s festivities were to be held. We were so excited, too, that Pam Barefoot of ATrendy Wedding assisted by her longtime friend and associate Kate were on board for this fun wedding. She made sure, as usual, that everything went off that evening without a hitch and is one of the most creative planners we’ve had the pleasure of working with. We get a chance a couple of times a year to document a wedding she’s planned, and always know they’re going to be gorgeous and perfectly suited to each unique couple.

The tables in the tent were decorated by the very talented Al of FloraCulture, with whom we had had the pleasure of working on a couple of occasions in recent months. The evening’s entertainment was provided by a singer/DJ named Norman Voss, who regaled the crowd with old standards over dinner, and a great mix of dance music for the party thereafter. Marcie and her dad’s dance together elicited more tears from onlookers, including Marcie’s mom who was overcome by emotion. Later on, Mosaic catering supplied a large dessert table for all the guests to nibble various treats and even set up a s’mores station with a bonfire, which was a huge hit. So huge, in fact, that they ran out of desserts initially and retrieved more from their café in the west end of Richmond. We could not have asked for a better wedding, and they and their families welcomed us as they would close kin. We had a great time the whole day! Thank you, Marcie & Garrett, and we’re absolutely thrilled for you both!

We’re happy to announce that several of our clients and their weddings got some press in Susie Coelho’s new book, Style Your Dream Wedding, on bookshelves now. In one of the more comprehensive tomes we’ve seen, Susie breaks down characteristics of variously themed weddings with detail suggestions and lots and lots of photos. We’re thrilled to be in such company and are thankful for our clients and, in the case of many of the detail shots, other wedding professionals such as Pam Barefoot of ATrendy Wedding, for helping to create such imagery here.

The books are available on amazon.com, and if you follow the link above to purchase it, not only will you get a discount off the cover price, it will go through the Holland Photo Arts associate program, where all related profits from the sale of the book will be donated directly to ovarian cancer research in honor of Anne’s mom, who would have loved this book. For those of you who have upcoming weddings and are looking for some design ideas for your own, we can’t recommend this book enough. Thank you, and enjoy!

Many of you have mentioned how much you enjoyed seeing some of our featured vendors this past winter, so we’ll do our best to keep it going during the busy wedding season, as well, although it might not be every week. Next up, is Rev. Claire Goodman!

We’ve been lucky enough to work with Claire on a few weddings over the years. Although she’s based in Charlottesville, we’ve photographed weddings she’s officiated both in Charlottesville and Washington, DC. Each time she brings a wonderful and personal touch to each ceremony, having gotten to know the couple over their months of planning. Claire is an interfaith minister and is just a very sweet person to involve in your celebration, no matter how large or how small.

A hearty congratulations go to Carrie & Ryan, who recently tied the knot at The Mill at Fine Creek, a gorgeous venue set into some remote woods west of Richmond. While it rained earlier in the day, effectively moving the ceremony from the lawn in front of the mill to the in-laid stone area adjacent to it, we couldn’t have asked for a nicer day for it. Ryan started off the festivities by delivering his wedding gift to Carrie, a beautiful diamond necklace, via their new puppy Steve for her. We loved it–the necklace and the picture of the puppy were the first things Carrie showed us when we arrived that afternoon.

We had met the couple as well as Carrie’s parents about a year ago at The Mill to talk about their ceremony and immediately fell in love with the entire family. They’re just so much fun and gracious, so we thought it apropos when Carrie told us her mom Pat would serve as both mother-of-the-bride as well as her maid-of-honor. She gave the most touching, tearful toast later that evening that everyone alternately laughing and wiping away tears. But first things first. We did some quick portraits individually with them and their wedding parties and was about ready to wrap up prior to the ceremony when the first of the busses carrying guests arrived early! We’ve never seen a bride run so fast, in Jimmy Choo heels no less.

Their pastor talked a lot about the characteristics of love during his homily in the ceremony, really getting the guests to think about their own relationships and setting the tone for Carrie & Ryan’s marriage. Afterwards we did a few more portraits with their families and entire wedding party out at the mill, plus a few of them, before the party started in earnest. Some weddings are very high energy, and some are slightly more subdued, and this was a high-energy wedding, with some crazy dances we captured along with David and Anwar from Blue Sky Films (we love these guys!) who were there to capture the motion and sound from the day. Al, of FloraCulture (those loyal blog readers will remember him from Alina & Justin’s wedding last October) set up elaborate table centerpieces for dinner, atop a lighted base that lit the flowers from the bottom at night. Alas though, the party had to end at some point, but the happy couple left amid enthusiastic family and friends blowing bubbles and throwing rose petals! This was our first spring wedding to kick off the season, and what a great way to do it. Thank you, Carrie & Ryan, for providing such great moments for us to capture! We had a great time with you all.

Now that Ryan’s seen Carrie in her dress, we can show a few from her bridal portrait session with us a couple of months ago (yes, it was quite cold! She was a real trooper getting outside for some of these). Can you figure out which one she chose for the framed portrait for display at the wedding?

I’m so thrilled to announce that one of Bill’s images that he captured at Meryl & Peter’s wedding this past fall has won best of category (receptions) in Photo District News, one of the top pro photography magazines! Their annual contest featured some wonderful material from photographers around the world (view the complete gallery), and we’re just so pleased to have a Holland Photo Arts image chosen from those entered. A special thanks go out to Meryl & Peter who provided the moment for us to capture for them. You can pick up the magazine at newsstands now.
